Peggie and Freddie Way

Peggie's life in Stutton started in 1942, when at the age of fourteen, she started work at Stutton Lodge as a parlour maid.  This being during the war domestic staff were restricted.

"I spent six years doing various jobs and finished up as Cook and Housekeeper, which although hard work, I enjoyed," she said. "We used to have a youth club in the village and every Saturday afternoon we would collect wastepaper etc. to help the war effort. There was also a Welcome Home Fund which held Whist Drives and Dances so we could give of good party to people serving in the forces from the village.

"In 1948, I married Freddie Way from Brantham and restarted work at Manor Farm as a tractor driver. We moved to a new house in a Manor Lane and have been living here for 52 years, being very lucky to have Sir Clavering Fison as a boss. We have one daughter. After Sir Clavering retired, Freddie was made a Farm Manager. He has now retired from full-time work and now just works part-time to keep things going.

"We have always been very active in the village organisations including:

Flower Show,
Youth Club,
Village Hall Committee,
Football Club,
Parish Council,
Community Council,
Carpet Bowls Club.

"I collect for British Legion Poppy Day and have just completed 54 years at it.

"We are enjoying a retirement and have so many friends and a family living just across the fields and a grandson now married and living in Ipswich.

"We just hope we can live in Stutton for the rest of a lives."
