Mr & Mrs Arthur Butler

Address 25, Cattsfield,
Stutton,
Suffolk, IP9 2SP.

Both Jean and Arthur served in the armed forces in World War II; Jean in the WAAF for six years and Arthur in the Navy for 2½ years coming out in 1943 minus a leg.  Jean's memoirs are in the Imperial War Museum.

After studying at Wakefield and the Royal College of Art, London, Arthur spent several years teaching art both full and part time.  Jean was a mature art student with particular interest in sculpture.  From the mid sixties until 1971, they lived in a converted Thames sailing barge moored at Pin Mill and opened the Barge Gallery in the forecastle.  People visited from yachts from many countries.  It was great for the teenage children; Charlotte, the elder becoming quite knowledgeable about barge sailing.

'75 - '86 were spent in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales but they decided they were too far from any of the family, so moved down to Devon, Charlotte by then living in Penzance.  Many happy years were spent exploring the delights of the South West, but eventually, further family matters brought them back to Ipswich.  Rewarding as that is with Flatford Mill and the Constable Country, Arthur, Yorkshireman, still longs for the wonderful landscapes and weather of the hills.

Both have a lifelong interest in music.
