Diane was born in Nottinghamshire where she was trained in the retail business. She became a Beauty Consultant and ran accounts for major cosmetic companies. Now, after early retirement, works part-time in a bookshop in Manningtree. They have children in Kent and New Zealand.

David was born in Middlesex but lived in Hertfordshire for 32 years. He became a stationery traveller of fine writing papers working in East Anglia.

They met in Hertfordshire in 1977 and moved to East Anglia in 1983 to be near the East Coast sailing waters. They settled in Stutton in 1991.
