St. Matthew’s School

Situated next to St. Matthew’s church, is the St. Matthew’s Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School. The building you see today was built in 1962, replacing the old school buildings, dating from the mid 1800s.

The School has strong links with the church, which hosts a weekly service for the juniors as well as end of term and thanksgiving services. At the beginning of each term the school invites Ministers to go in and share Communion and a word with the teaching staff. Both the school and the church are seeking to further improve the links through the All Age Worship Services.

Partnership. There is a real sense of growing partnership between the school, parents, Governors and the local community. “I would like to see faith in action demonstrated throughout the school” says Jan Watson, Head Teacher. “We have a multi-cultural school population and we need a curriculum that is balanced to meet the needs of our modern society. However, we also need well balanced spiritual input that compliments such a diverse school population.” St. Matthew’s school has a good standing in the community and Jan feels that as the Head Teacher it is vital that she continues to grow and nurture this good image. Jan has a hard working and supportive team of teachers committed to growth.
