Visiting
St Edmundsbury & Ipswich churches
In the Diocese of St Edmundsbury & Ipswich we have 479
parish churches with 94% of them listed historic buildings.
Many in areas of outstanding natural beauty. St
Edmundsbury Cathedral in Bury St Edmunds
is open daily from 7:30am –6pm, the admission is free
but a donation would be welcome. The Cathedral shop is open
Monday – Saturday 10am – 5pm and you can get
a meal at the Refectory which is open 9:30am-3: 30pm. Guided
tours can be arranged. See the Cathedral WebSite at www.stedscathedral.co.uk
The
Diocese includes some famous wool churches
such as Long Melford and Lavenham, some interesting market
town churches such as Framlingham, Eye and Mildenhall, as
well as many small rural village churches. Many of these
churches are open in daylight hours and are well worth visiting,
and are in enchanting villages with good pubs, or tearooms.
We
are gradually compiling a list
of all the open churches and what is available nearby.
If your church is open and not on the list, please Email
mgtblack@globalnet.co.uk.
Some
of the churches have their own web site… which you
will find on the parishes
page.
If
you would like help and advice on encouraging visitors to
your church, or you have an open church and would like to
be added to the list, please contact Margaret
Blackall, Diocesan Tourism Adviser, on 01728
747326 or email mgtblack@globalnet.co.uk.
