Gosnold
2007
This
year marks the 400th anniversary of the founding of the first
English speaking settlement in America at Jamestown, Virginia.
In 1607, three small ships set off from England, many of them
from Suffolk, arrived in May of that year and founded the town
named in honour of King James 1. The captain of one of the ships
"Godspeed" was Suffolk-born Bartholomew Gosnold. All
of Gosnold's 6 children were baptised at St James' Church, now
the Cathedral.
There
are many events across the diocese to celebrate Suffolk's close
relationship with America.
