PROJECTS
The Mothers' Union is a Christian organisation with 3.6
million members in 77 countries. It's aims are to support
and encourage marriage and stable family life. Our projects
are local, national and world wide.
In the
Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich we are involved with
voluntary work in the prisons at Highpoint, Edmund Hill
and the Carlford Unit at Hollesley Bay. We run a Birthday
Cake Project for the inmates of the Carlford Unit.
MU members donate money and cakes are purchased locally
and given to the lads on their special day. Often this is
their first experience of birthday cakes.
We are
able to offer Parenting Courses in some
parts of the diocese. Our facilitators are trained to a
very high standard and courses are well received. Also,
several of our members help at the Ipswich Contact
Centre, where absent parents can see their children
in secure and supportive surroundings.
We run
a holiday scheme for needy families. Members
fundraise to support these holidays, usually spent in caravans
on the coast. Families are referred to the MU by health
visitors, doctors or the clergy.
Many
branches run Toddler Groups, pram services,
Sunday school classes and after school clubs to reach out
to young families. Others run bible study groups, assist
at drop-in centres, or organise lunch clubs for the elderly.
Some branches produce packs for hospital
patients, whilst others knit clothes for premature babies.
We also offer support for the victims of domestic violence,
by giving gifts of toiletries, dried foods and household
linen. Some branches offer marriage preparation and baptismal
classes. |
