The
first duty of the PCC (Parochial Church Council) is 'co-operation
with the minister in promoting in the parish the whole mission
of the church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical'
[Synodical Government Measure 1969]. So the PCC has wide
responsibilities and serving on the PCC is an opportunity
to make a positive contribution to the church's life and
witness.
The
PCC is an important part of how the Church of England works,
acting as a link between the parishes, Deanery Synod and
Diocesan Synod, and through them with the General Synod.
The
PCC...
- should
be informed about and discuss matters concerning the Church
of England, and other matters of religious or public interest,
whether these are local or wider issues.
- draws
up a budget and has overall responsibility for the church's
financial affairs, including (where applicable) employing
paid parish staff, eg parish administrator, verger.
- is
responsible for the care, maintenance and insurance of
the church building, and its movable contents, and for
the upkeep of the churchyard.
- is
elected at the annual parochial church meeting. Clergy
licensed to the parish, and the Churchwardens, are automatically
of the PCC.
