The
Presentation of Jesus in the Temple - Rembrandt
Rembrandt painted
the story in Luke 2:22-38 more than once in his life.
This is a work from his early twenties.
Loving Jesus, Prince of Peace,
thank you that Simeon saw the Messiah,
and rejoiced in his coming.
Consider where
the light focuses in this painting. Is God revealing his
light?
.
Consider what the hands portray about each character.
What might Mary be feeling?
Consider how gently Simeon appears to be imparting his
message.
Consider whether Anna’s prayers are answered.
We
give thanks and praise, O God,
for the Gospel of the Presentation:
for the wisdom of Simeon and Anna,
for the loving care of Joseph and Mary,
for the simplicity and innocence of the child Jesus.
We pray for the different generations of our own day,
that in offering their lives in service to you and to
each other,
they may grow in mutual respect and understanding,
and so enrich the life of all,
for Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen.
