Earl Soham Baptist Church - who are we?

Martin Humphries

Music has been one of our strengths for many years.  Martin Humphries is one of our longest-serving musicians, having been with various bands in the past (Pathway, All Things New, Messengers of the Cross).

Martin Humphries

He moved from Ilford to Ipswich when small, and went (or possibly was dragged) with his parents to Holly Lodge Baptist Church where he was a keen member of the Boys’ Brigade, then later went to Stoke Green Baptist Church in Ipswich.

At 14 he became a Christian at one of Victor Jack’s summer camps—when he realised he had to start making decisions for himself.  That wasn’t a one-off decision however, but the start of a developing path following God.

On leaving school, Martin completed an apprenticeship with the printers WS Cowells in Ipswich before specialising in selling printing materials.  He started his own business in that line, but later took over his brother’s computer business (Chip Support), which was sold two years ago.

He then found working at home didn’t agree with him, and now works as Executive Director of Tools With A Mission (www.twam.co.uk) in Ipswich, a Christian Charity which sends tools into many countries, especially Africa.  He frequently talks about TWAM to churches and other organisations.

In 1984 with his wife Marion he moved to Framlingham where they ran the Martin Gallery in Market Square for two years.  Charlotte has finished a degree in music, while Oliver is at the beginning of a degree in sport.

As Earl Soham Baptist Church was Marion’s “home church” (she used to live in the village) they have been coming ever since leaving Ipswich.  Martin enjoys the worship and likes the challenging exploration of the gospel and its impact on the Christian life.  With a varied career he clearly enjoys a challenge.

See elsewhere in the magazine for details of the Rebelation concert on 23 February which is supporting TWAM.
