Letter from Clare

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” is a question often asked of children. In today’s world we are increasingly not just having one job, but often changing or developing careers in new ways mid life. Some jobs have traditionally been thought of as vocations, nursing, teaching, the Church, but all our work, out voluntary service has the potential and capacity to be as much a vocation, part of God’s call, God’s purpose as are the traditional vocations.

Do you nurture, grow, create, or make things? If so, perhaps you could see your job as cooperating with the creative work of the Father. A plumber who fixes a pipe, has done his bit, to make the world a little of a better place.

Do you serve others? All works of service, whether they be receptionist, nurse, doctor, refuse collector, reflect the ministry of Christ, who came to serve others and set an example of service, for us to follow.

Do you communicate as part of your job, or help others to communicate in some way, then in ensuring communication, imparting understanding, you share in the work of the Holy Spirit, who has come to lead us into all truth. The Spirit is also thought of as an Advocate, Guide, Refiner, Inspirer, the range of jobs, that fall within this wide understanding of God as Spirit, give us great opportunities to work with God, to be his people, his body.

Prayer

Christ has no body now on earth but ours,
Ours are the eyes through which he looks out with compassion on the world;
Ours are the lips which speak his words of “Peace”
Ours are the hands with which he reaches out in care
Ours are his ears which listen to those who are in pain
Ours are the feet which follow in his way.
Lord help us to be alive and at work in your world today.
Amen
