28th Royal British Legion (Earl Soham Branch)

Poppy

Art Exhibition & Sale

This year the Royal British Legion celebrates its 85th anniversary.  For 85 years the Legion has led the nation in remembering those who served their country.  This year we remember a whole generation of young men who sacrificed their lives during the Battle of the Somme.  Few families were left untouched by death or injury and yet many, on their return home, found that their bravery seemed forgotten and opportunities scarce.  It was in reaction to this that the Legion came to exist.

Today, 90 years later, the need for the Legion’s services is still as relevant.  There are 10.5 million ex-Service men and women and their dependants who are eligible for the Legion’s support.

The Earl Soham Branch of the Legion is proud to announce its 28th Art Exhibition and Sale to be held on August 26th, 27th and 28th in the Rowley Hall at Framlingham College Junior School, Brandeston Hall by kind permission of Mrs.  Gwen Randall, Head of Framlingham College and Mr. Nigel Woolnough, Master of Brandeston Hall.

The exhibition will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the first two days and from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 28th

This annual event offers a chance to demonstrate just how prolific and gifted many people are.  Some 400 paintings, drawings and prints will be on view and for sale and each artist contributes a percentage of their sale price to help the vital work of the Royal British Legion.

The money raised is used to support local ex-Service personnel or their surviving spouses.  Though veterans of the two World Wars are becoming fewer, there are those from more recent and, indeed, contemporary conflicts who need and deserve our thanks and support.

Suffolk Historic Churches Trust - 25th Sponsored Bike Ride

Bike

Saturday 9th September 2006, 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.

This event is now in its 25th year. It's an opportunity to get out on your bike visiting churches and other places of worship, and by way of sponsorship raise money for your parish church and for SHCT. Details and sponsorship forms available from your parish organiser or from Robert Grimsey (01728 685203) or Val Brumfitt (01728 685408).

Last year Simon Garrett narrowly failed to reach every church in the Deanery (claiming bad weather) - this year he aims to finish. Just over 40 churches and around 70 miles. All offers of sponsorship gratefully accepted (email or 01728 685 489).

St Elizabeth’s Hospice

At St Elizabeth Hospice we provide expert palliative care for the people of East Suffolk living with life-limiting illness and offer support and comfort to their families and friends.

To continue providing this vital care without charge to those that need it, we must raise £1.7 million this year - that equates to 6p every second!

Help the Hospice using the information superhighway!

There are a whole host of new and innovative ways that fundraisers can support their favourite charity in the 21st century.  Via the information superhighway - or the Internet as its more commonly known - we have access to new ways of giving that are fun and simple to use. Two new websites enable you to help our Hospice whilst ‘online’ - they are www.buy.at/stelizabethhospice and www.justgiving.com. or support one of the events

Earl Soham Fete 2006

The Earl Soham Church Events Committee would like to express their thanks to everyone who helped, donated or just attended the fete. It was a very successful day making a grand total (after expenses) of £2342.02.

The Lucky Programme number was 236.

A special thank you to J.J.Hutton, The Victoria, Earl Soham Business Centre, Jennifer & David Baker and Eat Anglia for sponsoring the programme and donations; to Lucy Murrell for the loan of her field; Sue Rutherford and her long suffering pony; Jane & Nigel Sheffield not only for the wonderful trains but for the use of their electricity and water and for storing of all the equipment year on year. Also a special thank you to Andrew Patterson, who not only donated the straw but tirelessly and uncomplainingly (well, not within hearing) transported van loads of white elephant things to and from the green as well as the freezer.

And of course, to everybody who manned the stalls and games – thank you! Without you the fete could not happen. Thank you all once again for making the fete such a happy occasion. As we have said many times before, it is very rare these days for a whole village to work together to produce such a traditional fete. We are indeed very fortunate in Earl Soham.

The Earl Soham Church Events Committee

Cake Stall

Congratulations to all of you who provided me with cakes for my stall. You came up trumps and we made an unbelievable amount - around £300 - the most we have ever achieved. My thanks also go to Judy Rowell and Sophie and Poppy Pritchard-Barrett who helped me behind the counter!
