Earl Soham August Bank Holiday Stall
Very many thanks to all those who helped set up, man and generally support the Bank holiday Stall.
Especial thanks to the Haines family who ran the plants and vegetables, to Nola and family for the Bric-a-brac and to all my helpers on the coffees, teas etc. The sun shone and the support was excellent. We sold lots of lunches and tea and cakes and a very happy day was had by all who visited us. The result was the best the late August Stall had ever achieved.

Earl Soham Bowls Club

The Annual Tournament held on Saturday, 10th September took place despite the torrential rain that preceded it. The organisers appreciated the support of the 48 participating players who arrived and were ready to play once the green had quickly drained of the surface water. The winning block came from Leiston Constitutional Bowls Club who outplayed the runners up, a block of players from Sole Bay, Benhall and Leiston Town Bowls Club, by just one shot. Third place went to a block from Badingham. Following a delicious tea the raffle took place and there was a special draw for an original flower arrangement donated by Malcolm Ashwell.
A record profit of £355 was raised for funds and the Club is once again indebted to Longstaff Transport for their generous sponsorship and to the Murrell family for the use of The Lawn as a car park. Earl Soham members themselves had taken part in an informal bowls competition a week previously for the Ashwell Shield. This was won by Allan Chenery and George Marsh was runner-up. Members and guests enjoyed a Ploughmans Supper and, together with the proceeds of a raffle, £126 was raised at this event.
Children’s Church at St Mary’s Earl Soham
25th September
We were delighted to have the opportunity at Children’s Church this month to give praise for the Harvest with songs, activities and prayers. Our children, aged between 18 months and 12 years old, enjoyed working together to find produce to match the letters HARVEST. We all struggled with the letter V but a “Variety of Vegetables!” was cleverly suggested by one of the children. We also shared a variety of breads from around the world as we shared in The Peace together.
There is a strong sense of community and fellowship as we come together on the 4th Sunday of each month at 9.30 a.m. to worship in a lively, child-centred and fairly informal manner and we warmly welcome any others to join us – you don’t have to have children to take part, we aim to provide a service which could equally appeal to all ages.
If you would like to find out more, then please just come along or telephone me, Jo Reed, on 01728 685794 for more information.

Pre-School Harvest at St. Peter’s
On Tuesday 13th September Earl Soham Pre-School held their session in St. Peters Church, Cretingham to give the children a hands on opportunity to celebrate Harvest within their community. The Church looked great with wooden train tracks on the carpet area, Duplo along the kneelers in front of the altar, the chairs used for the library, box pews filled with puzzles, farmyard, dolls nursery and the organ area becoming a shop with dressing up clothes, bags, shopping baskets and a chance for the children to buy vegetables and produce! All this amongst a church decorated for harvest in each window.
Outside was a grassed area with sand tray with Bob the Builder plus lots of balls, hoops, hobbyhorses and large paint tray!
Activities through the morning included making a Harvest Card, which was then walked down to the Post Office. Many thanks go to Margaret Williams, the Postmistress, who willingly collected in 21 pences grasped in little hands and exchanged this for a stamp which was eagerly licked. Some children needed a lift up to access the post box but most managed and will have the delight of it dropping through their door in the week. We collected leaves of all shapes and sizes, painted and printed them and hang them around the fence to dry.
Children brought gifts for Harvest, which were included in the Church’s donation to the Salvation Army that week. A wonderful circle time with all the children in the largest box pew had some wonderful discussions about where fruit and vegetables come from, how they were harvested - some children knowing the exact details of a John Deere/International Tractor! We used the window displays to identify vegetables and pictures to show harvest and the gathering in. Songs were then sung to praise the Lord for his gifts to the earth.
Snack time had the added bonus of the older children buying ‘chocolate fingers’ from the shop!!
A really beautiful morning when the sun shone and children ran in and out of the Church. The wonderful sound of children giggling, nattering and being busy in this old building, which become a most suitable Pre-School for the day, was a humbling experience for all the adults involved. Our sincere thanks to Cretingham PCC for giving permission for this ‘idea’ that sprung from our Summer Planning Meeting. Yes please, we would like to do it again another time!!

Church Housing Trust
Church Housing Trust is a charity dedicated to the rehabilitation and resettlement of homeless people of all ages and backgrounds. By tackling the longer-term issues that perpetuate homelessness, rather than providing quick fixes, Church Housing Trust offers new beginnings for homeless people of all ages.
Our ultimate goal is to help homeless people regain their independence and resettle in the community, by supporting residents in over 50 projects including hostels, move-on housing, foyers, day centres, winter shelters, women’s refuges and mother and baby projects.
We support the work of English Churches Housing Group, a housing association which provides accommodation and support for over 2,500 homeless and vulnerable people each day of the year. Their projects include hostels, move-on housing, foyers (accommodation with training programmes for young people), day centres, winter shelters, women’s refuges, and drug/alcohol rehabilitation schemes. Church Housing Trust’s funding makes a real difference to residents in more than 70 of these projects. Our ultimate goal is to help them regain their self-esteem and to equip them with the skills and confidence to resettle and to lead independent lives in the community.
By becoming a friend to homeless people and supporting our work, you could help us accomplish that vital objective - an independent future for more and more people whose lives lack the security and dignity which most of us so fortunately can take for granted. Church Housing Trust depends totally on voluntary contributions from individuals, churches, companies and other concerned organisations.
Your donation can help with the rehabilitation, education and resettlement of homeless people throughout England and make a real difference to the lives of homeless people.
Donation forms can be obtained from the Editor.
Earl Soham WI
The Earl Soham WI, which meets every 4th Thursday in the village hall at 7.30 pm, held its summer garden meeting at Grove Farm, the Cretingham home of Issi Coe. Later in August, an afternoon tea party was arranged at Well Farm, Charsfield, by kind invitation of Sheila Crompton, to which family and friends were invited. On neither occasion did members allow the rain to dampen their spirits. As well as the regular monthly meetings, the WI has splinter groups for bridge, books, scrabble, craft and walking. Newcomers to the area have remarked on how the WI has helped to integrate and make new friends.

Plastic Waste Re-cycling
I am Jasmine Broad and some of you may remember that a while ago (around April), I gathered a petition, singed by many of the villagers, in regards to a ‘plastic waste’ collection service. However, I received a reply from our local councillor, from Suffolk Coastal, who informed me that he attended a ‘meeting on this issue’ yet unfortunately ‘there is no plan to introduce a recycling scheme for at least the next 2 years’. I would like to thank Mr Jackson for his efforts to tackle and lessen the problems of plastic rubbish disposal in our area even though he was unfortunately unable to solve the problems for the moment. I am sorry for the delay in delivering the ‘verdict’ of the petition which many of the Earl Soham villagers eagerly and considerately signed. It is comforting to know that although the petition did not prevail to the desired result, we as a community demonstrated a veritable concern for the preservation of the environment in which we live.’
