The 2007 Annual Draw of the Earl Soham 100 Club took place on 9th October.  Twenty four members turned up to see cheques for £330 each presented to the Village Hall and St Mary’s Church.  £660 was given out in 20 prizes ranging from £75 to £5.  Thanks to the Committee for all their help during the year and providing a very nice buffet on the night.

We look forward to continued support in 2008 from existing members and hopefully some new ones.  Please contact me if you would like an application form.

Earl Soham Harvest

Both the Church and the School Harvest services were very happy occasions when we were able to express our gratitude to God for the wonderful world He has given us and to share his goodness with those less fortunate.  A good collection of fresh fruit and vegetables were taken to Mills Meadow in Framlingham, and a quantity of tinned and packet foods were taken to the Ormiston Children’s Centre in Ipswich, for which we have received a letter and card of thanks.  Thank you to all those that gave so generously, both at church and through the school to support this work.

We hope to collect Christmas gifts at the Carol Service for the families at the centre, so do remember this as you do your Christmas shopping!

Suffolk Historic Churches Trust Cycle Ride for Earl Soham

A very big thank you to all of our five cyclists this year.  A total sum of over £650 was raised between them - a splendid achievement.  Special thanks and congratulations must go to Mary Patterson who raised £307 and who works tirelessly each year for the Trust, not only during the ride, but successfully collecting in all the sponsor monies!

Thanks must also go to all the sponsors whose generosity will result in half of this sum being donated to St.  Mary’s Church.

Global Poverty Prayer Week 12th-18th November

Unite with people all over the world as they pray for an end to needless poverty that claims innocent lives.  Take time in this week to ask God to make changes in our world so that 50 million people can be released from material and spiritual poverty and ask Him to show us how we can each play a part in this.  As Saint Augustine said: we should work as if it all depends on us and pray as if it all depends on God.

Earl Soham Carol Singing

An advance notice for your diaries!  This will take place on 20th December, starting at the Church at 6:30pm.  It is part of our Connect 4 programme but we hope that many in the village will join with us as we bring the true Christmas story to as many as possible in the words of our favourite Carols and collect for the work of the Children's Society.  Also, if there is anyone who feels able to refresh the singers at the close of the singing could you let me know.

The Christmas Crib at Earl Soham

This will again take place on Christmas Eve at 6:30pm outside the Church. This is an Earl Soham event but we are happy to include other children from our three villages providing we can fit them in.  If you would like to take part and are under the age of 14, contact Mary Vellacott (685423) by the end of the month so that we can make plans and distribute costumes in good time.  There will be a rehearsal on December 16th at 10:00am and it would be very helpful if you can note this date and be there for the rehearsal.

RIP

George Eade

George was born and lived all his life at Cobbolds Row, Earl Soham, the youngest member of a family of eight.

He attended the Village school and on leaving, began work at Church Farm, Earl Soham.  He also worked at Page’s Farm, Cretingham, Lodge Farm, Ashfield and for many years up until he retired at Ashfield Place Farms.  Much of his early working life was spent using heavy horses for which he always held a great affection.

In his younger days George was a keen footballer.  He was a lifelong fan of Tottenham Hotspur and followed the fortunes of Ipswich Town.  He always had plenty to say when the results came in at a quarter to five on a Saturday afternoon!

George was always willing to help anyone and to pass on his great knowledge of Countryside matters.  Many of you will remember him, along with his Brothers and Friends chatting away on the Chapel corner as they watched the World go by.

George took great pride in his allotments and spent many hours there, growing an abundance of vegetables and flowers.  In the days before his death he had been digging up potatoes, harvesting his onions, gathering beans and preparing the seed for next spring’s planting.

Although George had some problems with his mobility he liked to keep active and as busy as possible and so it was, in the early afternoon of August Bank Holiday Monday, while happily strimming the grass, the long and busy life of this true Suffolk old boy came to a sudden but peaceful end.

We apologise to both George Marsh and to George Eade’s family for the misinformation in the October issue of the magazine and website.

Mrs M McAstocker RIP

It is with great sadness that I report the death of my beloved Aunt, Mary McAstocker (nee Murrell) on September 8th 2007 in Courtnay, Canada, aged 93.

Mary was born at Windwhistle Farm, Earl Soham on April12th 1914, the third child of Harry & Ethel Murrell, a baby sister for her two brothers, Harry and Osric.

She was educated in England then emigrated to Canada in 1939 where she settled in Trail, British Columbia.  There she met and fell in love with a young reporter named Leo McAstocker.  They married and set off on their adventures aroud Canada before settling down on Thetis Island where they cleared land, built a house and raised five children.  She is survived by her children, eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.  She will be greatly missed by all those who knew her
