Interregnum - Benefice Vacancy and reorganisation

Update on the vacancy 8 May. A panel of representatives from the Mid Loes Benefice has interviewed a number of candidates for the post of incumbent. Unfortunately it has not yet been possible to fill the post. This means that the appointment process is continuing. As the process of searching for a new incumbent started only last November, we might still hope that an incumbent could be appointed this year.

RIP

John Baxter

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of John Baxter of Ashfield.  John had always been a local man, born in Cretingham, the eldest of four children.  Whilst he attended Earl Soham School and Framlingham Modern his great love was the countryside and would often go with his father who looked after Mr Bloomfield’s cattle.  John did not enjoy school and left as soon as he was able, going on to work for Mr Bloomfield.  At 18, he was called up and joined RASC with whom, after a brief training period, he went to Egypt, driving tank transporters.  On his return, John had a variety of jobs, always looking for a new challenge.  Through work, John made a good friend, Maurice.  On being invited around to tea he met Maurice’s sister, Doreen who was then 15.  A courtship ensued and on 25th March 1961, they were married.  Firstly, they lived in Sunnyside Corner, Ashfield and whilst there they had Little Mead built.  John lived there for the rest of his life.  Unusual in these times, a truly local man.

John had many interests.  When he was younger, motorbikes were a particular love, often visiting the speedway track.  Aircraft always featured as an interest with an annual visit with his brother Rolly to the Mildenhall Air Show.  He also had a lively interest in shows and a particular affection for Daniel O’Donnell and the Tiller Girls! He and Doreen loved dancing in particular to Glen Miller and often would be first on the dance floor.  On the athletic front, he had been a keen footballer playing for Debenham and several times appeared at Portman Road when Debenham were in the final.  He liked the challenge and had recently taught himself to use the computer.

John was a straightforward honest man.  A good, steadfast friend who was always prepared to give people the benefit of the doubt.  He will be greatly missed by us all.  We offer our love and sympathy to Doreen, Andrea and all the family.  May God bring comfort and peace.
