Friends of St Peter’s Cretingham

The Taj Mahal is so well known that many people may have thought that there was little that they did not know about this unforgettable building gleaned from a visit, book or television programme.  This may have accounted for the poor attendance on 27th March when Peter Baker gave a most informative illustrated talk on the complex, of which the mausoleum is only a part, encompassing its history structure, construction, maintenance and repairs, and the mogul emperors with whom it is associated.

Sheila Hardy came to Cretingham following the publication of her book on the “Cretingham Murder” and entertained a churchful of listeners to an event that put Cretingham on the pages of the national newspapers a little over a century ago.

She is coming again on 16th May (7pm at St Peter’s Church) to talk about her recently published biography of “Lady Nelson”.  Everybody knows about Lady Hamilton, now is the opportunity to hear about Nelson’s wife.

Sheila Hardy is an excellent storyteller.  I am sure the talk will be entertaining as well as informative.   If all the Friends bring their friends the Church should be full once more.

“24 Hour Prayer”

Saturday 6th May in ES Baptist Church

This is the third of our prayer events and will focus on “Nation Standing with Nation”, which is part of the national Prayer Week (May 7-14, see http://www.prayerweek.com/index.php). There will be someone in the Baptist church throughout the period and you can come at any time of day or night. Book a time in advance or just turn up (Saturday morning until Sunday morning). There will be displays to provide material for your prayers, and plenty of “venue dressing” to provide an atmosphere and mood conducive to prayer and contemplation. Usually people pray silently on their own, but being broad-minded God will accept any form of prayer. All welcome.

Wednesday 10th May in Ashfield Church

There will be an evening of open prayer organised by our benefice and the Charsfield benefice and the Baptist Church.

An Antarctic Evening

Linda Lancaster delivered an illustrated talk in April on her recent cruise to Antarctica. This was held in Earl Soham Village Hall and was much appreciated by the audience who also enjoyed a tasty finger - buffet with wine. Linda organised the evening as a fundraiser for the Hall and was able to present the Committee with £259.60.

Many thanks to Linda and the refreshment team from the Hall Committee.

And from Linda… Many thanks to Geof & Val Brumfitt,  Lyn Tinkler, Peter & Jane Andrews and Jane Cornelious for providing and helping with the refreshments at my slideshow on “Antarctica”. Thank you, also, to all those who came and made the evening a success. The Village Hall doors will benefit by about £260. Linda Lancaster
