Interregnum - Benefice Vacancy and reorganisation
Update on the vacancy 8 May. A panel of representatives from the Mid Loes Benefice has interviewed a number of candidates for the post of incumbent. Unfortunately it has not yet been possible to fill the post. This means that the appointment process is continuing. As the process of searching for a new incumbent started only last November, we might still hope that an incumbent could be appointed this year.

National Coffee Morning for “The Children’s Society”
Brewing a better future for children…
The Children’s Society second national coffee morning will take place on June 20th, 2007. Friends, family and neighbours, local and within our benefices are welcome to join me for a cuppa and chat, on the 20th June from 10.30 am at Tubric Cottage, Cretingham. Besides being an opportunity for local friendship to grow, the morning is a fund raising event, for the Children’s Society. We will hold a small raffle.
For Fun: do bring along a photo of yourself as a youngster and share some happy memories of your childhood or show us pictures of your children and grandchildren.
At 11am we will put down our coffee cups and join with supporters all over the country in praying for the Children’s society, using the prayer below.
Loving Lord,
We thank you for the work of the Children’s Society as it continues to reach out to children facing danger, discrimination and disadvantage in their daily lives.
Guide and strengthen its work alongside children and young people who are homeless and on the streets; refugees and asylum seekers; in prison or facing problems in the community; or living with disabilities.
Forgive us for the times we have failed to support those experiencing pain and injustice and grant us the wisdom to listen to the voices of the young and to respect their gifts and insights.
Help us to work together with them to create a fair and just society where all may know the fullness of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
Whether or not you are able to take part in the coffee morning, please take a few minutes to join us in this prayer wherever you are on that morning.
Thank you,
Wendy Gourlay

RIP
Sidney Smith 25th November 1904 - 23rd April 2007
It is with deep regret that we learn of the death of Sidney (Sid) Smith at the age of 102. Whilst not an Ashfield resident he was well known to all in the village from his visits to his son, Colin and Judy his daughter-in-law and attendance at many village events. Sidney was a Londoner born and bred. After leaving school at 14 he joined Harrods where he spent all of his working life. Due to the untimely death of first his father then his mother the responsibility of the family and care of his younger brothers fell on his shoulders. During the period leading to the death of his mother, Ada, from cancer he met Ivy but they waited several years until Ada’s demise before they married. The couple purchased their first house in Harrow where their only son, Colin, was born. The house stimulated a love of gardening which Sid carried with him for the rest of his life.
The war took him with the RAF to the Scilly isles and formed a love of the place, the scene of many post-war holidays. He had many other interests from bowls to trains. Indeed his 100th birthday celebrations included a trip to the York Railway Museum and a ride on the new tilting train. Following his retirement and Colin’s move to Suffolk, Sid and Ivy purchased a bungalow in Sudbourne where he lived until almost the end of his life. Country life necessitated learning to drive which he did at the age of 65. This gave rise to new interests in photographing the old churches and village signs for which Suffolk is famous. Following Ivy’s sudden death in 1991 and the later loss of his driving license he kept on travelling with an expert knowledge of bus timetables and a railcard.
He will be sadly missed by us all and our condolences go out to Colin and Judy and to the grandchildren and great grandchildren he leaves behind.
May God bring comfort and peace.
