The following meeting on Thursday 26th October will be a talk on "Volcanoes and Earthquakes". This is an open meeting to which members of the public are invited, so please mark the date in your diaries - more details later.

Earl Soham Pre-School - Pedal Push

On Thursday morning 25th May the Pre-school opened its doors wide to take part in the Childline PEDAL PUSH. Everyone locally was invited to come and visit the Pre-school, see the children pushing & pedalling their trikes, prams, bikes around the hall where cones had been set up and Stop & Start road signs put in place! A corner was set up as a workshop with tools, workbench, computer and phones to ensure that everyone could keep going!
Tea and Coffee was served as well as a homemade Cake Stall and Bookstall for people to browse through. It was lovely to see some Mums, Grandparents and local people popping in to see the delight on the children’s faces.
A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who came and supporting the event. Childline answers calls from around 2,300 children every day. With our help they can extend their lines and answer many hundreds more who cannot at the moment get through because the lines are busy.
The children of Earl Soham Pre-school pedalled and pushed their way to raise and magnificent £115.00. Well Done.
St Mary’s Earl Soham Village Stall
Earl Soham May Bank Holiday stall on Saturday 27th May raised £282 despite the rain that drove us into the village hall. We wish to thank all those who contributed by their help on the day and those who donated cakes, produce, plants and goods for sale. It was a very enjoyable village occasion thanks to everyone who came and supported the event.

Tom Arthur Nicholls
29th November 1924 – 23rd May 2006
It is with much sadness that we record the death of Tom Arthur Nicholls whose funeral was held in Kelsale Church on the 31st May 2006.Tom was a real gentleman with a strong faith, he clearly liked people, and he was loved and respected by all who had the privilege to meet and work with him.
Tom was born on 29th November 1924, the third youngest child of eight (four boys and four girls). Tom spent his early years on his father’s farm in Griffydam, Leicestershire – an early upbringing which clearly had a profound impact on him as a child and which lasted for the rest of his very fulsome life. It nurtured in him a love of harvest, haymaking and for animals.
When war broke out in 1939 he became a fireman in the Special Auxiliary Fire Service. In 1942 he was called up and joined the Royal Anglian Regiment as a driver, driving tanks. On June 7th 1944 he was sent to Normandy. He saw active service in France, Belgium and Holland. In 1949 he was demobilised and returned to Leicester.
Tom worked in the clothing industry for all of his working life, and it was at his work in Leicester in 1949 that he first met Anne. In 1952 they were married – which was the start of 54 years of a loving and fruitful marriage.
Anne and Tom had two sons – Shane born in 1957, and Simon born in 1960. Tom was granddad to six grandchildren - Harriott, Verity, George and Alice and Felicity and Drew his two step-grandchildren. Due to the unfortunate, relatively early, deaths of two of his brothers-in-law, Tom was a “stand-in” dad to a number of his nephews – a role that he accepted very willingly.
Tom and Anne moved to Earl Soham in 1992. They joined our Church family with enthusiasm, and very soon became a major part of our church and village life.
If there was a committee needing an active member, a social event requiring a willing helper, a job needing a volunteer or a charity needing funds to be raised Tom was there. He served on our PCC for many years and proved to be a man with strong views and quite a wicked sense of humour. He was also a trustee of the Friends of St Mary’s, which has raised thousands of pounds for restoration and repair work on our church.
Tom has a lasting legacy in Earl Soham, for which the villagers are, and will forever be, most grateful. He spent many hours renovating and rebuilding our garden of remembrance. It is a well-used spot, which is very much appreciated.
Tom was with us in Earl Soham for just 12 years, he was a friend to us all and we all missed him very much when the family finally moved to their new home in Kelsale. Unfortunately, since the move to Kelsale Tom’s health was not good, and latterly he was very ill indeed, and he died on the 23rd May 2006.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Anne and the family.
