Nativity

Immensity cloistered in thy dear womb,
Now leaves His well-belov'd imprisonment,
There He hath made Himself to His intent
Weak enough, now into the world to come;
But O, for thee, for Him, hath the inn no room?
Yet lay Him in this stall, and from the Orient,
Stars and wise men will travel to prevent
The effect of Herod's jealous general doom.
Seest thou, my soul, with thy faith's eyes, how He
Which fills all place, yet none holds Him, doth lie?
Was not His pity towards thee wondrous high,
That would have need to be pitied by thee?
Kiss Him, and with Him into Egypt go,
With His kind mother, who partakes thy woe.

Age Concern

Age Concern Domestic Information Help Line

Finding out what we need to know isn’t always easy.  You’ve probably had the experience of making six telephone calls only to end up back where you started.  Very often, it’s not that the help isn’t there; it just seems impossible to know where to find it.

The Domestic Information Help Line does not provide any services directly, but helps callers to track down a company, organisation or person who does.

Details of WHO DOES WHAT, WHERE THEY DO IT and WHAT THEY CHARGE are available through our HELP LINE.

Here’s just a flavour of the requests for help we have received: -

  • housework
  • fixing a leaking tap
  • gardening
  • unpacking after a house-move
  • shopping
  • meal preparation
  • small sewing jobs
  • respite care

& many, many more! In short, it’s all about assisting older people to access the help they need, because finding out isn’t always easy.

If you think we can help you, do get in touch.

Earl Soham Primary School

I would like to take this opportunity from all at Earl Soham School to wish you a happy and safe Christmas. We have been doing lots of exciting things here at school leading up to the end of term; one of these is preparing for our Christmas concert.

We are sharing some of the songs and acts from it at St Mary’s Church in Earl Soham on Tuesday 11th December at 1.30pm. If you would like to come and see the children perform you would be most welcome.

On a more personal note I will be leaving the school after Easter to take up a Headship post in Ipswich. I have had four super years working at the school and with the local community and will leave with many fond memories. Can I take this opportunity to thank the many members of the local community who have supported the school and myself during this time. I look forward to see the school going from strength to strength and creating more ways to share ideas and facilities.

With best wishes

Steve Wood Headteacher Earl Soham Community Primary School

This will take place on Thursday 20th December, starting at the Church at 6:30 p.m. and we plan to finish 8:00 - 8:30. We need lots of singers to celebrate the season of Christmas. The money that we raise will be sent to the Children’s Society as in past years.

Earl Soham Carol Service

This will take place on Sunday 16th December at 6pm. We are collecting gifts for the Ormiston Children’s Centre, Ipswich and these should be wrapped and labelled for the age group for which they are suitable and whether boy or girl or adult. The gifts will be placed around the tree at the beginning of the service. The gifts we take are very much appreciated and help to make Christmas happy for families that have very little.

The Christmas Crib at Earl Soham

We will be erecting the stage outside the Church on Saturday 15th December starting at 9:00am. We would value help from strong and able people! The children's practise will be on Sunday 16th December at 10:00am but remember to let me know if you would like to take part in the Crib service well before this.

The event itself will take place on Christmas Eve at 6:30pm outside the Church.This is an Earl Soham event but we are happy to include other children from our three villages providing we can fit them in.  If you would like to take part and are under the age of 14, contact Mary Vellacott (685423) by the end of the month so that we can make plans and distribute costumes in good time.  There will be a rehearsal on December 16th at 10:00am and it would be very helpful if you can note this date and be there for the rehearsal.

Earl Soham Bowls Club

The Club’s popular Beetle Drive, held recently in the Village Hall, was well attended by both members and supporters alike.  During the evening, twelve rounds of Beetle were played and the winner of the Drive was Nola Calver, a regular supporter of the event.  A Ploughman’s Supper was served followed by an elimination card game with cash prizes.  The raffle was well supported and the Club is most grateful to members and the many non-members who generously donated prizes.  The Club benefited from £207.25 which was raised as a result of the evening.

SHCT Cycle Ride 2007

Robert Grimsey would like to thank everybody who helped him in anyway with the above. Those who manned Ashfield Church and all those who sponsored his own efforts I have raised over £200 + Gift Aid half of which goes to SHCT the other coming back to Ashfield.. During the day I managed to take in all 32 Anglican churches within the Loes Deanery and three Baptist Chapels that were on my route! I am uncertain as to actually how many miles were cycled but at a guess would put it at at least 70, the weather conditions were favourable too which all made for an enjoyable day. Thanks again.

Ring out, wild bells

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light;
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.

Ring out the grief that saps the mind,
For those that here we see no more,
Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
Ring in redress to all mankind.

Ring out a slowly dying cause,
And ancient forms of party strife;
Ring in the nobler modes of life,
With sweeter manners, purer laws.

Ring out the want, the care the sin,
The faithless coldness of the times;
Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes,
But ring the fuller minstrel in.

Ring out false pride in place and blood,
The civic slander and the spite;
Ring in the love of truth and right,
Ring in the common love of good.

Ring out old shapes of foul disease,
Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;
Ring out the thousand wars of old,
Ring in the thousand years of peace.

Ring in the valiant man and free,
The larger heart, the kindlier hand;
Ring out the darkness of the land,
Ring in the Christ that is to be.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson
